- This Post is canonical to my Minecraft 1.17.1 post, my 1.19: Combat, Enchanting, Adventure! post, and my 1.20: A New World post.
The 1.18 update was announced during Minecraft Live 2021. This does not include the announced features for the Second Combat Update revealed during Minecraft Live 2021. The Savannah Update is a minor update to Java and Bedrock Editions released on April 24th, 2022. It was originally announced in Minecon Earth 2018, where Baobabs, Termites, and Ostriches were confirmed. It was the longest amount of time between any two updates due to the sheer size of the 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update.
The Update's development on Java Edition started with 22w02a, which was released on January 5th, 2022. The First pre-release was on April 11th, the second on April 20th, and the third on April 21st.
The Update's very first look was on Bedrock Edition with 1.17.500, which was released on December 25th, 2021 on Christmas Day!
The Full Update was added to Education Edition on August 4th, 2022.
Notable Features[]
New Blocks:[]
Thickweed: A type of grass generating only in the savannah biome. It is extremely hard to see through unlike Tall Grass. It slows you down a small amount when walking through it. It can also be made by applying bone meal to tall grass. It also slightly flows in the wind, but not as much as most shader packs do.
Baobab Saplings: Are dropped when Baobab leaves are broken. Planting them in a 3x3 square makes a Baobab Tree. They can only be placed on Dirt, Coarse Dirt, Farmland, or Grass Blocks. Bone Meal can be used on these to grow a Baobab Tree. They can be used in composters and do not grow if they are planted on Moss Blocks or Podzol.
Baobab Logs: Are grey-brown bark with a peach-tan inside. They can be stripped and crafted into wood like all other logs. They are slightly stronger and more blast-resistant than other log types, and also take longer to be eaten by Termites.
Baobab Planks: Are milky-white, even lighter than Birch Wood. Are slightly harder and more blast-resistant than other wood types. Can be crafted into respective slabs, stairs, fences, fence gates, signs, pressure plates, buttons, trapdoors, and boats.
Baobab Leaves: Have a 15% chance to drop a Baobab Sapling when mined. Have a 2% chance to drop a stick. Generate on top of Baobab Trees and can be composted.
Maize Kernels: Six are crafted from one Maize. They also generate in Savannah Village Farms. They are planted to grow Maize/Corn Crops. They can be bone mealed to grow faster and grow to two blocks high, more than any other plant. They drop one Maize when broken. Putting the Maize in a furnace or smoker yields one ear of corn. Maize Kernels can also be fed to Chickens to make them enter love mode. When Maize is harvested, it drops 1 Maize. The chance for it to drop 2 instead of 1 increases by 33% per level of Fortune.
Termite Nest: Generates Naturally in Savannah Biomes within a twenty-block radius of a Baobab Tree. Has an 0.4% chance to spawn a termite every tick. Only drops rooted dirt when mined with anything except a silk touch tool. The Block is 1.4 blocks tall. It can have 20 termites at a time.
Decayed Logs: Added Decayed Types to all overworld logs. Decayed Logs cannot be crafted into anything.
Decayed Wood: Added Decayed Types to all overworld wood. Decayed Wood cannot be crafted into anything.
Ostrich Egg: Laid by Ostriches. Up to 4 can be laid on a single block. They only hatch on Coarse Dirt, Gravel, Sand, or Concrete Powder. The eggs instantly break if the concrete powder is turned into concrete. On average, Ostrich Eggs hatch after 6.5 in-game days.
Down Beds: Have two crafting recipes. Can be made with 1 Banner, 1 Bed, and 3 Large Bird Feathers, or a Banner, Bed, and 7 Regular Feathers. The Banner shows up on the bed as a sheet. The Down Beds restore 3 Hearts when slept in. If the player's health is full, then it gets one extra heart that is a deeper red than the others. The extra heart cannot be regenerated if lost. The player gets a second extra heart if they are full at 11 hearts, and the number will keep going up until the player has 5 extra hearts, where they can get no more. The developers said that the reason these were added is because it gave the ostrich a use, and also gave feathers another use. They also pointed out that bed-sheets with banner designs were one of the most-voted features on the Feedback Website.
Oil: Found uncommonly in veins of 5-15 blocks in Dripstone Cave Biomes. Explode if exposed to Fire or Lava. Considered an ore, despite being a liquid. Can also be crafted with 6 Corn Ears and a Bucket, to teach about renewable energy.
Items[]
Large Bird Feather: 0-2 Dropped from Ostrich Mobs upon death. Can be used to craft down beds and brushes from the Archeology System. The number of large bird feathers dropped by ostriches can be increased by looting.
Ostrich Leather: 0-1 Dropped by Ostrich Mobs upon death. Can be used as an alternative to Rabbit Hide to make Bundles. 2 Can be crafted to make 1 leather. The number of Ostrich Leathers dropped upon death can be increased by looting.
Maize: Harvested from Maize Crops. Can be smelted in a furnace to make an Ear of Corn. Can be fed to Pigs, Buffalo, and Goats to make them enter love mode. Can be crafted into 6 Maize Kernels. They can be eaten to restore 1 Hunger Shank or 2 Hunger Points.
Ear of Corn: Can be eaten to restore 3 hunger shanks or 6 Hunger Points. Can be fed to Pigs, Buffalo, and Goats to make them enter love mode. The Ear of Corn is the most-restoring plant in Minecraft excluding stews, soups, and golden carrots.
Popped Corn Kernels: Are made by putting Maize Kernels in a furnace. They restore half a hunger shank or one food point when eaten. They can also be fed to Chickens to make them enter love mode.
Buffalo Hide: 0-3 Dropped from a Buffalo upon death. Can be used in a crafting table to make 3 leather. The number of hides dropped by Buffalo can be increased by looting.
Raw Buffalo: 0-4 Dropped from a Buffalo upon death. More may be dropped if the player has looting. Can be put in a furnace/smoker or placed on a campfire to make Cooked Buffalo. The Raw Buffalo restores 2 Hunger Shanks or 4 Points, while the cooked version restores 5.5 hunger shanks or 11 points, making it the second-most restoring food in the game, only surpassed by suspicious stew.
Cooked Buffalo: Obtained from Raw Buffalo from a furnace or campfire.
Bucket of Oil: Can be used as furnace fuel to smelt 50 items.
Mobs[]
Ostrich: Have 10 Health. (5 Hearts) They spawn naturally in all Savannah Sub-biomes. They are passive mobs. When Killed, they drop 0-2 Large Bird Feathers and 0-1 Ostrich Leather. The amount of drops can be increased by the looting enchantment.
Have an adult, hatchling, and baby variant.
Is the first mob to have 3 growth stages.
Can be bred with Carrots.
When bred, Ostriches look for the nearest block of coarse dirt, sand, gravel, or concrete powder. They prefer coarse dirt over other blocks. If there is no coarse dirt in a 20x20 block radius, they look for the nearest available block they can find. The ostrich with eggs will sit down on the block and start sticking its head in over and over, until 1-4 Ostrich Eggs are laid. Unlike turtle eggs, monsters do not seek out eggs to destroy them, although they will break if the mob is accidentally standing on it. The egg will break if any adult mob stands on it for 150 ticks.
Ostriches will seek out and eat Termite Mobs.
Ostriches will never leave a 35x35 block radius of their eggs, even if the eggs are on a non-hatchable block such as stone.
When Ostrich Eggs hatch, they form an Ostrich Hatchling. The Hatchlings are small and yellow in color. They will squeak and chirp and follow their siblings or parents around. It takes them 4-6 minutes to grow into a Baby Ostrich. Baby Ostriches are a smaller variant of adult ones, have the same coloring as their parents, and will sometimes flap 2 blocks in the air. It takes them 10-18 minutes to grow into an adult variant. Hatchling and Baby Ostriches drop no items or exp when killed.
Drops 1-3 experience orbs when killed.
Buffalo: Have 50 Health. (25 hearts) They spawn in the "Buffalo Herd" in any grassland sub-biome. Buffalo Herds have 3-12 Buffalo in them. Buffalo is the only animal with unique spawn mechanics. If a Buffalo Herd is large, then there is a higher chance of more Buffalo spawning. If it is small, less buffalo will spawn. If the Buffalo Herd is completely destroyed, no more buffalo will spawn in that sub-biome. This was implemented by Mojang to encourage conservation and discourage overhunting while also keeping the Buffalo useful. They are neutral mobs like llamas, and they will attack once if the player attacks them. Baby Buffalo are passive.
Have an adult and baby variant. The baby variant drops no exp or items when killed.
Can be bred with wheat or corn ears.
Are not slowed down by Thickweed.
When Killed, they drop 0-3 Buffalo Hide and 0-4 Raw Buffalo. This number can be increased with looting.
Stampedes have a chance of happening during a thunderstorm, where if lightning strikes near a buffalo, the herd has a 50% chance of running in a random direction. The Buffalo will go into a sprint. If the buffalo runs into a player, they will take severe damage for each buffalo that hits them.
The smallest mob in Minecraft, a simple 1x1 pixel.
Are considerably slower than most mobs because of their size. They have no health because they cannot be killed by the player, as they are simply too small. Instead, they can be eaten by Ostriches. They are the first passive mob that acts to the detriment of the player.
Are not slowed down by thickweed.
Have a 0.4% chance of spawning on a Termite Nest every tick. They will seek out any wood-type block in a 30x30 radius. If 5 or more termites are on a log or wood block, they will convert into a Decaying Wood/Log, a version of that log that is crumbly and brown/black, after 20 seconds. (400 ticks)
They will go back to their nest and wait four minutes (4800 ticks) before venturing out again to wreck more wood.
They will convert any wooden planks or decaying wood/logs to Rooted Dirt just like they do to regular logs/wood.
They will convert any rooted dirt that is farther than 10 blocks away from their base into another termite nest after 80 seconds. (1600 ticks) It requires 8 termites to do this. After the termites make another nest, they will disappear.
Termites cannot destroy waxed variants of wood, logs, decayed wood, decayed logs, and planks.
Termites have been used to create rooted dirt farms.
World Generation[]
Added new savannah sub-biomes.
Grassland: No acacia trees generate. Baobab Trees generate, but they are few in number. It is full of tallgrass and thickweed. This is the only sub-biome where buffalo spawn.
Flatlands: No acacia trees generate. Baobab Trees generate, but they are few in number. This sub-biome has no tallgrass or thickweed, and only has regular grass. It is the flattest biome in Minecraft, has no lakes or rivers, and is great for building.
Acacia Forests: Acacia Trees generate in very large numbers. There is ferns and grass. No thickweed generates. There are no baobab trees in this sub-biome. No savannah villages generate in this biome.
Structures:
Baobab Trees: Massive 3x3 trees with more blocks on the bottom as a stump. They generate very uncommonly in Grassland and Flatland sub-biomes.
Watering Holes: Large lakes only generating in the regular savannah and the grassland sub-biome. More animals will spawn by the lake, and Ostriches and Buffalo can sometimes be seen drinking the water.
Massive Termite Mound: A very large termite mound generating very uncommonly in Grasslands and Flatlands. It is a large pile of rooted dirt with 2-4 termite nests in it. It can have up to 80 termites total if 4 nests generate.
Old Bridges: Bridges made of Baobab Slabs and Fences. About 30% of the blocks are missing. There are some chains hanging from the bottom.
