The Ocean and Orange update was a major update announced at Minecraft Live 2024. The update was put into 2 parts, part 1 being released in October 2024 and part 2 being released in March 2025. Part 1 of this update centers on the already existing ocean biomes and blocks and items to be added to the game while part 2 centers on the new major biomes and structures to be added. The update as a whole also centers around the nether's own oceans and lava. This Article talks Part 2 of the update. Part 1 can be found here.


Additions[]

World Generation/Biomes/Structures[]

  • Twilight Ocean
    • "The oceans are vast, and now, and they are now deeper than ever, reaching to as low as deepslate, so prepare to be deep underwater."
    • A deeper and rarer Ocean
    • The floor is a thick layer of Smothered sand
    • Small volcanic-like structures made out of dripstone can generate
      • Contain magma
    • Guardians naturally spawn and despawn here
    • Small ore deposits can spawn on the seafloor of the Twilight Ocean
  • The Midnight
    • Only generates where the Twilight Ocean reaches below y level 1
    • The floor here is made out of Deepsand
    • You loose air 25% Faster while in this biome and below y level 23
    • Breathstealers can spawn here
    • Small patches of Sculk Growth can generate
    • A bit bigger ore deposits can be found in the midnight, but most covered by Smothered Sand
  • Abyssal Caves
    • Abyssal caves generate when a flooded cave generate where the deep dark is
    • Infested in Sculk Blocks
    • Sculkfish spawn in the caves
  • Lava River
    • Lava Rivers generate similar to the way regular rivers generate, but smaller
    • Generate in the nether
    • Can lead to lava-falls into the lava ocean
  • Cooled Sanctuary
    • Generates almost like a nether waste
    • No ores generate
    • No mobs spawn
    • All the lava's replaced with magma
    • Fossils Uncommonly generate
  • Lava Reaches
    • At the edges of this biome the Lava ocean gradually rises
    • The Lava ocean here is elevated to 48 blocks
    • Volcanic-like structures made from hot obsidian generate in the lava.
      • Sometimes (very rarely) Ancient debris generates on the hot obsidian
  • Melty Meadow
    • A biome where a mix of Nylium generates on the ground
    • Foliage varies as it's a mix of crimson and warped forest foliage
    • No huge fungi generate
    • The Lava ocean here generates much deeper, almost to obsidian
    • Small bits of Ancient debris can be found on the lava ocean floor.
  • Overheated castles
    • Castles that generate in Lava reaches and Mealty Meadows
    • Are mainly built out of Deepslate bricks, and as it goes lower it gradients into Blackstone bricks.
    • Magma blocks occasionally generate here too
    • Chests can be found here
      • Contain somewhat similar loot to bastions
      • Instead of Pigstep there's Heatflip

    • A shovel is required to mine this block
    • Generates in The midnight

Items[]

  • Music Disc - Erudition
    • Can be found on rare occasions in berried treasure chests, or much more rarely in Sunken ship chests.
  • Music Disc - Heatflip
    • Can be found in Overheated Castles

Mobs[]

  • Breathstealer
    • Health points: 2 hearts (Unbloated) 6 hearts (bloated)
    • Resembles a slime, but black and more opague.
    • Spawns in the Twilight Ocean (rare) and The Midnight
    • When they attack they don't deal damage, but instead take away 5 air bubbles from the thing they're attacking.
      • If the thing they're attacking has 4 or less bubbles, they take 2 hearts of damage
      • Bloats up when they attack
      • After attacking they'll become passive until they unbloat
      • Takes 2 minutes for them to unbloat
    • Drops 1-3 Slime
  • Sculkfish
    • Spawn in the Abyssal caves
    • When anything comes near it they immediately swim away.
    • Will preferably swim to the nearest Sculk Sensor
    • Sometimes drops a sculk block
  • Scout
    • A type of fish found in the nether
    • Immune to fire damage
    • Swims in lava
    • Drops single gold nugget upon death

Advancements[]

  • Swift N Water
    • Use either a Dart or Water Flare to kill something underwater
  • Deeper than can ever be
    • Make it to the bottom of The Midnight
  • Stopped at sundown
    • Stop a Sculkfish from finding a Sculk Sensor in time
  • Get it while it's still hot!
    • Obtain Hot obsidian
  • Releasing your inner... Fish? (Goal)
    • Blow a goat's horn at midnight while being at The Midnight
  • Not a good place for milk and cookies (Goal)
    • Drink milk and eat a cookie in the lava reaches
  • Something's Fishy (Challenge)
    • Swim down exactly 100 blocks without going for air (non source blocks don't count)
  • Ocean n Orange (Challenge)
    • Be in the nether's lava ocean for more than 10 minutes and swim in it for at least 100 blocks.

  • Adventuring Time now requires you to find the Twilight ocean, The midnight, and the Abyssal Caves.
  • Hot Tourist Destinations now requires you to goto a Lava river, Cooled Sanctuary, Lava reaches, and Melty Meadow
