1.17.0, the first release of the Caves & Cliffs update, is a major update to Bedrock Edition released in mid-2021. It was first announced during Minecraft Live 2020 on October 3, 2020.

Blocks
- Amethyst Block
- Generates amethyst crystals on the top surface, in a given time.
- Unobtainable in survival.
- Extremely rare, only generates in amethyst geode structures.
- Amethyst Crystal
- Grows on top of geode blocks over time.
- Can be generated upside down.
- Breaks to produce a crystal shard item.
- These can be crafted into telescopes.
Azalea Bush
- Has variants with either no blossoms, pink blossoms, or purple blossoms.
- Azalea Leaves
- Has variants with either no blossoms, pink blossoms, or purple blossoms.
Azalea Roots
- A new decoration plant.
- Copper Blocks, Cut Copper, Cut Copper Stairs, Cut Copper Slabs
- Copper blocks are used for storage.
- Made with 9 copper ingots.
- Only cut copper can be used to make stairs and slabs.
- Made with 4 copper blocks.
- Develops a patina of pale green copper carbonate over multiple stages, which might be sped up by weather such as rain.
- Honeycombs can be used to make waxed copper, which does not progress beyond the patina stage it has at the time.
- Candle
- A light source.
- Can have up to four in a single block, similar to sea pickles.
- Variants for uncolored and all 16 colors.
- Emits fire particles.
- Can be lit with a flint and steel or fire charge or an arrow fired from a flame-enchanted bow or a fire charge shot by a dispenser if it hits the candle.
- When lit, the player can left click it to snuff it.
- Right-clicking a candle on an uneaten cake makes a "birthday cake", which can have 1 candle placed on it.
- Uncolored candle crafted with 1 string and 1 honeycomb
- Colored candle crafted using one of the 16 dyes and one uncolored candle

- A new decorative block.
- Can be turned into Slab and Stair variants.
Churn
- Used for making Cheese.
- Putting 4 to 6 Milk Buckets in creates 1 Cheese.
- Clay Pot
- Ceramic Shards can be incorporated into an unfired pot.
- Can be fired by lighting fire under the pot.
- Pot can fit up to 8 Ceramic Shards.
- Copper Ore
- New ore, found underground.
- Drops itself when broken, like other metal ores.
- Spawns in new large ore veins.
- Can be used to craft a Lightning Rod or a Telescope.
As rare as iron.
- Dripleaf Lily Pad
- A block similar to Lily Pads.
- Generate in Lush Caves.
- Dripleaf Plant
- A plant that can be used for platforming.
- If the player stands on top of the plant for a period of time, the player falls through the plant.
- Dripstone
- A new block that generates in the Dripstone Caves.
- Glow Vines
- Light source.
- Grows edible glow berries.
Glow Worm Nest
- A glowing block that generates in large Caves.
- Glow Worms come out when they are broken.
Lichen Block
- A new block that has five types, Sunburst (orange), Rubrocincta (red), Marine (blue), purpura (Purple), and Dark Lichen (black).
- They generate in Mycosphere biomes.
Lichen Cover
- A new block that has five types, Sunburst (orange), Rubrocincta (red), Marine (blue), purpura (Purple), and Dark Lichen (black).
- It is like Lichen Blocks but only one pixel thick.
- They generate in Mycosphere biomes.
- Lightning Rod
- Crafted with copper.
- Redirects nearby lightning strikes to the top of the rod, which can prevent flammable structures from catching on fire during thunderstorms.
- Marble
- Similar to Diorite, but with a smoother texture.
- Found underground surrounding the outsides of geode formations.
- Moss Block
- An opaque block that appears grassy on all sides.
- Found in lush caves.
- Moss Cover
- Same texture as the moss block, but one pixel thick.
- Muddy Clay
- Found in Lush Caves, usually in Water.
- Painted Clay Pot
- Created by firing a clay pot.
- Upon firing, any placed Ceramic Shards become permanently incorporated.
- Also upon firing, the color of the clay pot changes from whitish-blue to brown.
- Powder Snow
- Similar to snow, but entities fall through it, similar to traps or the "snowier snow" announced when the Mountains won the 2019 biome vote.
- This is how regular snow layer blocks worked in old versions of Minecraft, but it was changed because it created accidental booby-traps when lava ponds generated at the right height to cut out the ground but not the snow.
- Prismstone
- Found in underwater geodes.
Pygmy Dripleaf Plant
- A smaller varient of Dripleaf Plants.
- Appear highly varied in models.
- Rooted Dirt
- Part of the Azalea tree.
- Resembles a dirt block, but with the roots of the azalea tree intertwined.
- Azalea Roots are the source of all the life in lush caves.
- A new variant of the dirt block.
- Spore Blossom
- Sends particles downward when opened.
- Sculk Block
- Generates in the Sculk Crag biome.
- Sculk Chute
- Generates in the Sculk Crag biome.
- Players can fall through it.
- Sculk Growth
- Generates in the Sculk Crag biome.
- Generates in a layer on top of blocks, similar to snow.
- Some have parts that are transparent, allowing the player to see the block it is on top of.
- Sculk Sensor
- Generates in the Sculk Crag biome.
- Can be used for wireless Redstone.
- Senses block placement, footsteps, and projectiles.
- Wool can occlude its ability to sense.
- Can be used with a piston to create a wireless Redstone clock.
- Emits particles when it hears a sound nearby.
- Stalagmite
- Can be found on the floor of the Dripstone Caves.
- Deals damage when landed on.
- Stalactite
- Can be found on the ceiling of the Dripstone Caves.
- Can fall, but unlike sand or gravel, breaks apart on impact.
- Drips water, which can fill cauldrons placed under it.
- Slate
- Can be found around the Sculk Crag biome walls.
- Can be found in large groups.
Wolf Lichen
- A new plant that has five types, Sunburst (orange), Rubrocincta (red), Marine (blue), purpura (Purple), and Dark Lichen (black).
- They generate in Mycosphere biomes.
Items
- Amethyst Shard
- Drops from Amethyst Crystals.
- Used to make telescopes.
- Bucket of Axolotl
- Obtained by using a water bucket on an axolotl, similar to fish.
- Brush
- Used to sweep away debris from archaeological items.
- Sweeps debris off archaeological items one layer at a time. If interrupted, the block it was being used on will simply disappear, and will not yield custom block heights.
- If it is used too many times, it will turn blue-green, and can not be used.
- Can be repaired in a Smithing Table using a Copper Ingot.
- Bundle
- Can contain one cumulative stack of any variety of item types.
- Stack sizes are sustained. For example, a bundle containing 32 blocks with a stack size of 64 could only hold an additional 8 ender pearls, as the stack size of an ender pearl is 16; the half-stack of ender pearls added to the half-stack of blocks is calculated as one full stack. Unstackable items like minecarts remain unstackable.
- Items are added by dragging bundle to an item.
- Tooltip shows icons of contained items.
- Items drop to inventory when right clicked.
Ceramic Shards
- Obtained with a brush at archeological sites.
- Come in different colors and different designs, each depicting a different picture, such as an Ender Dragon, Alex, a Skeleton, a Tree and a Vindicator.
- Can be placed/customized on clay pots.
- Currently using placeholder art, according to Jasper Boerstra.
Cheese
- Cheese is a new food item.
- To create Cheese a player has to put 4 to 6 Milk Buckets in a Churn.
- Restores 6 Hunger Points and 8.4 saturation.
Goat Milk
- Goat Milk is a new food item.
- It does not heal players, but removes Weakness and Slowness.
Cooked Chevon
- Cooked Chevon is a new food item.
- Restores 8 Hunger Points and 6.4 saturation.
- Copper Ingot
- Used to craft the Block of Copper
- Used to craft the Lightning Rod
- Copper Nugget
- Crafted with Copper Ingot.
- Glow Berries
- Can be eaten.
- Used as a light source.
Raw Chevon
- Dropped from Goats.
- Restores 3 Hunger Points and 3.5 Saturation.
- Can be cooked into Cooked Chevon.
Spawn Egg
- Added Alerter, Goat, Axolotl, Warden, Ladybirds, Glow Worms, and Glow Squid spawn eggs.
- Telescope
- Crafted from amethyst shards and copper.
- When held, allows the player to see far away through a small ellipse.
Warden Mask
- A new helmet that, when equipped, makes any mob which is the last mob you killed will glow.
- Is dropped by Wardens.
Wax
- Can be used to make Candles and stop Copper from aging.
Mobs
Alerter
- Spawns in Sculk Crag.
- Will scream if it detects a player.
- Will not detect a player if they are sneaking.
- When they scream they alert the Warden.
- Axolotl
- Based on the critically endangered Mexican salamander with the same name in real life.
- Found in bodies of water within lush caves biomes.
- Was the first ever amphibian added to Minecraft.
- Can be caught in a bucket like with fish.
- Can be tamed by capturing it in a bucket.
- Come in different colors (leucistic, yellow, green, brown, and purple/pink).
- Plays dead when damaged, receiving Regeneration. Appears to turn invisible after this.
- This regeneration ability is likely based on how real axolotls can regrow lost limbs.
- Attacks drowned, guardians, elder guardians and fish.
- Sometimes can give Regeneration to the player who tamed it.
- Glow squid
- Originates from Minecraft Earth.
- Glows in the same way that Magma Cube cores, Blazes, the eyes of Spiders, Drowned, Vexes, and the eyes of Endermen do.
- Lives in flooded caves.
Glow Worms
- Glows in the same way that Magma Cube cores, Blazes, the eyes of Spiders, Drowned, Glow Squid, Vexes, and the eyes of Endermen do.
- Lives in large Caves.
- Drops Wax when killed.
Goat
- Spawn in Mountains
- Run away from anything that attacks them
- Drops Raw Chevon, Cooked Chevon and wool
- Can be milked for Goat Milk
- Have an adult and baby variant
- Can be bred with Wheat
Warden
- Spawns in the Sculk Crag biome.
- It is the first blind mob.
- When sensing movement, it moves towards the source of the movement.
- When attacked, it heads towards the player, it Seems to follow the same rules as the sculk sensor when detecting noise.
- Dims/flickers all lights whenever close
- Follows players.
- Does not detect players that are sneaking.
- Incredibly strong, deals 30 damage, bringing players wearing full netherite armor to 7 health points.
- Gets stronger every time it gets hit.
- Has 130 health points.
- It has more health than it's Java edition counterpart, which has 100 health.
- At least as fast as the player's walking speed.
- Moves faster when attacked.
- Becomes aggravated when attacked, and will follow the player continuously regardless of any other distractions.
- Has 80% knockback resistance.
- Throwing any projectile, i.e, a snowball, near the Warden will cause the mob to head to the location of where the projectile was thrown, due to the projectile itself creating movement and noise, therefore distracting the warden.
- The Warden's chest has a glowing core that appears to brighten and dim in tandem with the ambient lighting of the deep dark cave biome.
- Will attack all other mobs, except other Wardens.
- Is over 3 blocks tall, making it one of the tallest mobs in the game, exceeding the iron Golem and Enderman.
- Ladybirds
- Found inside Mycosphere biomes.
- Can be saddled and ridden on.
- If they are ridden on they will be tamed.
- It will only stay in the air for a few seconds before it slowly glides down.
- Come in different colors (red with black spots, brown with black stripes, red with white spots, dark yellow, and black with two yellow spots).
- After five minutes of flying, they get tired.
- If they get tired they will jump on the player's back, after 5 minutes they will jump off and follow the player again, unless they are right-clicked, which will make them sit.
- Attacks hostile mobs.

- New biome at the bottom of the world.

- A massive cave biome containing vast quantities of stalactites and stalagmites.
- Lush caves
- Generate below azalea trees.

- A large tunnel-like cave.
- Marble is very common here.
- Mycosphere
- A new underground biome with Giant Mushrooms everywhere.
- Most of the ground is covered by Lichen Blocks and Lichen.

- Mountain Meadow
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : 0.3
- Generates between about Y-level 90 to 150 on a mountain. Sweet berry bushes can be found here, as well as cornflowers and dandelions. Trees do not naturally generate here
- Mountain Grove
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : -0.2
- Generates from about Y-level 100 to 150 on a mountain, and creates a forest of spruce trees on the lower slopes of a mountain. Rabbits spawn in this biome. The surface is also covered with snow, snow blocks and powder snow.
- Snowy Slopes
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : -0.3
- Generates from about Y-level 130 to 180 on a mountain. It is also covered in snow, snow blocks and powder snow, plus a bit of Ice. Goats spawn only in this biome.
- Lofty Peaks
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : -0.7
- Is one of the three highest mountain biomes, which generates above Y-level 160 on a mountain. Whether the lofty peaks or snow capped peaks biome generates depends on temperature. This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it. This biome is covered with snow and ice blocks
- Snow Capped Peaks
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : -0.7
- Is one of the three highest mountain biomes, which generates above Y-level 160 on a mountain. Whether the lofty peaks or snow capped peaks biome generates depends on temperature. This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it. This biome is not only covered by even more snow and ice, but packed ice as well.

- Temperature : -0.9
- Is the highest mountain biome, which generates betwen Y-level 160 and 320 on a mountain. Whether the lofty peaks or snow capped peaks biome generates depends on temperature. This biome will only generate on mountains that are tall enough to generate it. This biome is not only covered by even more snow and ice, but packed ice as well. And it is much higher than the Snow Capped Peaks.
Teal Mountains

- The Frost Woods biome contains tons of snow, much like the Snowy Taiga. It is a large forest with Spruce, Peppermint, and Frost trees.
- Alpine Tundra
- Type : Cold
- Temperature : 0.0
- The Alpine Tundra is a very mountainous biome and one of the highest biomes in game, with its peaks extending to over 287 blocks. The Alpine Tundra is very snowy, with deep banks of snow several blocks deep covering the peaks of the mountains. As expected, this is a very cold biome. The only above-ground structures here are Monasteries.Most normal mobs, passive and hostile alike, do not spawn here.

Sounds
- Added sounds for Alerters, Goats, Axolotls, Wardens, Ladybirds, Glow Worms, Glow Squids, and the new biome ambiance.
- Archaeology
- The player can find items and blocks in gravel and dirt inside the dig site structure by using the brush.
- Possible items are:
- 1-2 Ceramic Shards (16.43% chance).
- 1-3 Diamonds (3.74% chance).
- 3-7 Coal (29.62% chance).
- 1 Clay Pot (4.43% chance).
- 4-12 Bones (14.74% chance).
- 3-7 Skeleton Skull (3.57% chance).
- Dimming of light
- While in the deep Sculk Crag biome, the ambient lighting occasionally dims temporarily, limiting the player's visibility. This serves as a warning that the Warden is nearby.
- Vibrations
- An action can cause vibrations in the air, which can be picked up by sculk sensors and wardens
- Can be caused by walking, block placing, block breaking, doors or trapdoors opening, chests of any kind opening, pistons activating, and projectiles such as snowballs, eggs, or arrows landing.

- Local water levels
- A new generation aspect has been introduced, which allows for certain areas of a world to generate with a water level different than another area.
- Allows for the generation of larger underground lakes and connections to oceans.
- Allows for the generation of many underground waterfalls.
- Allows for underwater entrances.

- Height dependent generation.
- Revamped, featuring some new small spruce trees on the slopes and ice or packed ice above the peaks.
