The black dinocerous is an extremely rare and extremely hostile mob added in Minecraft 1.18.
The black dinocerous is a very dangerous mob, even when unarmed and armorless, dealing 7 damage with its deadly claws and having 30 health, but it can equip itself with weaponry and a shield on top of that. The black dinocerous is twice as fast as the player, and it can sprint, climb (slowly, on planks, cobble, etc. along with ladders), shatter glass panes (or even solid glass blocks, given enough time), and knock down doors to get to its prey. ( 4 times as fast as zombies, and can break down iron doors)
The black dinocerous has a fittingly intimidating and dark appearance, with a scaly, black, reptilian visage demarcated with striking red eyes and white pupils. The black dinocerous uses a similar model to humans, but has a tail and six large claws.
Thankfully, the mob is as rare as it is dangerous. The black dinocerous, in fact, doesn't spawn in any biome of any dimension the game - instead, the black dinocerous only spawns in Nightmares. Most notably, a group of them spawn in the home invasion nightmare, trying to break into a large wooden house and kill an initially unarmed player.
The player can find equipment strewn around randomly in chests, but it will require a basic mastery of the new 1.18 combat system, even with good equipment, to take on even a single black dinocerous. Oftentimes, many of them will simply swarm and overwhelm the player all at once. If you're able to take on one at a time and beat them all, you'll be rewarded with a diamond.
This nightmare will only occur on hard/hardcore difficulty mode.
Trivia[]
- Ironically, despite being the most dangerous of the dinocerous mobs by stats, it is the least dangerous of the three to hardcore mode players, as it can only "kill" the player in nightmares, where "deaths" are not "real" and do not end a hardcore run.
- The black dinocerous does not have a spawn egg. This is intentional, to add mystery surrounding the mob following its addition in the changelog.
- Black Dinocerouses can spawn with customized razor swords, either with gold or iron blades and guardless hilts.
