1.30, the first release of Rails & Gales, is a major update to Java Edition released on March 28th, 2028. It focuses mainly on Minecarts and weather, adding new types of Minecarts and Rails, including Chorus Carts and Wooden Rails, and revamps the weather system. This update also introduces many new blocks and weather types, added three new biomes, Electric Caverns, Abovelands, and Warped Inferno, added the Blazing Eye (from the 2025 mob vote), and adds a new Wind system along with Wisps.

Originally, 1.30 was to be the version number the REDACTED update would release as, but it was changed to 1.31, then named Desert update, due to the world generation overhaul taking longer than Mojang was hoping.

The update was originally revealed during MINECON Festival 2027 on September 27th, 2027.

Additions

Blocks

Silt

A material that generates at Y = 26 to Y = -41 in large blobs.
If it detects a Minecart moving within fiftteen blocks away it will have no gravity, meaning it will fall until it touches a block.

Thermal Vent

Thermal Vents are a block that generate in the Warped Inferno biome in the Nether.
Thermal Vents create wind up to seven blocks above it.
- The Wind speed is 5 blocks per second, and moves in the direction it is placed.
Can be turned off if powered.

Wooden Rails

A type of Rail that functions the same as a normal rail.
Three Wooden Rails can be crafted with three Rails, and six Sticks.

Items

Cloud in a Bottle

A Cloud in a Bottle is an item that, if in the players inventory, lets the player jump while in the air.
Are not stackable.
When used, they will turn into a Bottle, if there is no room in the inventory, they will be dropped on the ground.

Mobs

Wisp

A mob that spawns anywhere where the wind is more than 3/16th of a block
- The spawn rate increases every 1/16th of a block per second.
Wisps can be captured in a bottle to create a Cloud in a Bottle.
Wisps have 4 health and are passive.
Sometimes drops Ectoplasm.

Non-Mob entities

Chorus Cart

Chorus Carts are a type of minecart that teleport to a random nearby Rail when touching a Powered Rail.
Chorus Carts are also an entity in Mine-Kart, they are created when a Minecart is hit by a player teleporting to them with a Chorus Fruit.

Wooden Minecart

Wooden Minecarts are a type of Minecart, they are crafted with one Minecart and eight Sticks.

Gameplay

Weather

Thermal Explosion
- A type of weather in Warped Inferno biomes.
- tilts players screen upside down, and the wind is one block per second.
- All entities are turned upside down.

Wind

Wind is a mechanic the pushes an entity or particle a certain direction.
- Weather affects the wind speed.
  - In most weather, the direction is west, but for Thermal Explosion, the direction is up.
  - Weather particles, like rain, or snow, also get pushed.
The speed is measured in blocks per second, for example, rain moves entities and particles at 1/16th of a block (one pixel) per second.
Wind creates wind particles in the area where the wind is.
Wisps can spawn anywhere where the wind is more than 3/16th of a block.
- The spawn rate increases every 1/16th of a block per second.
