Land of the Champions
Episode 4
The Scavenger
...
It was just another day for Star Fenhill, digging into other people's garbage for scraps. Today, her big target was Terrainville. She'd been here before when it was more bustling, but today, it seemed like more and more people were leaving. She wandered why that was. She hoped there wasn't some plague going around.
Normally she would beg to shop owners, using her charm ability to get what she wanted. But with how few people there were, she doubt she would get very far with charm. Charm magic wasn't as simple as, wave your hand at the person you want to charm and they'll do whatever you wanted. Charm magic was a to persuade another being using subtle suggestions. This did not necessarily always work, even their minds were susceptible to charm. Charm is basically extra charisma, boosted by scent produced by specific magical creatures, from a specific part of their body, in Star's case, her tail. All kitsunes have special magic in their tails that allow them to produce the special scent at will, and turn it off at will.
For today's haul, she found a slightly eaten apple, moldy sandwich bits, and something that could pass for raw pork, but she wasn't sure how keen she was on consuming it.
Star: *Sigh* "I hate dumpster diving. I can't live like this. Stockpiling food scraps for the night, and then being forced to survive at night with nothing but a magic minion to defend me."
A tiny green blob landed in front of her as she hopped out of the dumpster in her fox form.
Star:" At least you don't need to eat to survive. No offense though, you aren't a very strong minion."
The baby slime just sat there, wobbling.
Star:" Guess I just have to look to the stars as usual. For what good that'll do for me. Come on, let's go."
As she was about to leave Terrainville she heard yelling from the guards.
Guard 1:" Look alive! Goblins invading from east!"
Guard 2:" Goblins invading from the east!"
Guard captain:" Civilians, into your homes! You, kitsune!"
Star thought one of the guards was talking to her, but it turns out the kitsune they were talking to was on the other side of the walls surrounding Terrainville.
Guard captain:" If you want inside, help us fend of the waves of goblins!"
Star: Uh oh. If Goblins are attacking, that means the everything is on lockdown. Which means I can't get out until the invasion is over.
Star gulped hard, and went into hiding. Climbing up one of the buildings, she saw a male kitsune, helping face the hoard of goblins. His fur was all purple, and his overcoat an darker shade of purple. He fought off waves of goblins. She watched in fascination, as he defended the wall. Eventually, he succumbed to their strength, and was pinned down, clashing sword to sword with a goblin Warrior. One of the guards, likely the head guard, bravely jumped down and fought his way towards the other kitsune, saving him from the offending goblin. The guard offered a hand, and pulled him up.
Star: I guess some of the guards are nice than others.
A goblin sorcerer appeared right in front of Star in a purple cloud of smoke. He snarled at Star, causing her to get spooked, and fall off of the building. She screamed as she fell, and grabbed onto one of the windows. An arrow pierced her side, and she let go of the window, and landed with a squeak. The only thing keeping her alive was her natural defensive magic. She laid there, whimpering for a while. As she saw men in armor were running towards the gate that had just been busted open by goblin sorcerer whom managed to teleport inside, Star was holding on for dear life, begging Inari to let her live. She may be a scavenger, but she was very religious.
Star: Sh-she will protect me. She will protect me. Please protect me. You've always been there. Please don't let me die now.
Suddenly, a man almost walked casually right past her. He wore blue jeans, and a pale green shirt. He turned and looked down at her, crouching. This man had a white face, blue eyes, and brown hair.
Jacob:" Look what we have here. Not very strong, are you. And yet, still clinging to life. Maybe I have some use for you, yet. Let's see what we got here?"
The man reached out and picked her up. Normally, she would run from a stranger, but she barely had the energy to move.
Star: Oh... Lythia. Is this your doing? Did you bring him? Thank you. But... who is this man? And... why does he talk like that? What's he going to do with me?
As they went through the town, she was still trying to keep herself awake. Star would allow herself to black out, but she didn't feel like she could trust this man fully. Not that she had much of a choice. She could barely feel her own legs. Something didn't sit right with her about him, and she couldn't help but feel curious. She didn't want to die in her sleep. If she was dead, she wanted to know it.
She saw the armored men congratulating the purple kitsune. The man took her into one of the houses. He lay her on the floor and started... drawing? He seemed to be drawing a circle on the floor. Likely a magic circle. She didn't like this at all. Magic circles are usually associated with dark magic.
Jacob:" Still haven't blacked out yet? Might want to. This is going to hurt. A lot."
He dragged Star over to the middle of the circle. It was strewn with glyphs that tell the circle what to do. The circle began to glow, but before she could feel what was happening, she felt her eyes getting tired. She couldn't keep them open. She found herself...
Star: At peace. I can be at peace now. I want... to roam the fields now, please.
...
Star woke up, but much to her surprise, and disappointment, she did not wake in a field of rice.
Star:" What happened? Aren't I dead? Did I not deserve the to roam in Lythia's fields?"
Star looked around. This spot looked familiar. It was still daytime, so there were no zombies or demon eyes out and about. She was still hurting quite a lot, so she had deduced that she was still alive, at least. Her arrow wound, however, was completely healed.
Star:" Oh well. I guess I'll be in the gardens of Lythia some other time."
She gave a gentle smile, and looked up towards the sky.
Star:" But she has saw fit to allow me to live. I suppose you have reason for me to be here. I'm thankful, but why? I am, of course, a humble servant of yours, and I love you like all foxes should. But I am hardly anyone important. I can't fight. I can't work the fields. I'm just a scavenger. All I've ever done was take what I need, and rely on my slime minion to take care of small enemy monsters. I'm not nearly as capable as that other kitsune. Sure I can heal small flesh wounds, and maybe some minor diseases, but my magic isn't very strong. My illusions aren't very impressive. And yet, you still give me the chance to show purpose. Maybe you love me, as much as I love you. I mean, I already knew that, but... Nothing. Thank you."
Star began to emit a soft glow, and she began to transform. Her form took the shape of a white, female human, with yellow hair, and ears resembling those of a fennec fox, instead of human ears. Attached behind her was a long, beautiful, bushy, fennec tail. She wore an orange robe, with a topaz gem embedded above the chest area.
Star is not very combatant. She uses a slime staff, which summons a baby slime to fight for her. The slime, however, does not do much damage, so she avoids really mean looking enemies. Star also relies on healing and defensive magics. The reason she couldn't heal herself earlier was because of the arrow that got stuck in her. Using healing magic to close the wound would have also resulted in making the arrow part of her, which is neither safe, nor ideal.
Around her neck, she wears what is called a panic necklace, a magical accessory, shaped like a heart with an exclamation mark in the middle, that gives her a temporary boost in speed when she is hurt.
She began making her way towards a place that held special value to her. She recognized this part of the forest, remembering exactly where to go. Heading up a man-made staircase, she looked upon a family of red foxes sleeping underneath a cherry tree. One of them, a tiny fox kit, slowly lifted her eyelids, and rubbed at her face. She saw the werefox and tilted her head. Star crouched and reached out her palm. The tiny kit sniffed at her, and barked happily.
Star:" Would you like to visit Lythia with me?"
The tiny fox squeaked in excitement.
Star:" Okay. Follow close now. It's not far. I'm sure your family wouldn't mind."
The two walked down a path surrounded by cherry trees, pink petals drifting in the wind. They arrived at a shrine, with a stone statue of a regal-looking half person, half canine figure. She stood tall, a wore clothing like a human, specifically robes. Her body was also covered in fur, and she had the ears and tail of a fox, but the muzzle of a wolf. Lythia is known to those in Mysticia as the goddess of shape, because she was a shapeshifter, and could turn into any animal. The changeling races, such as werewolves and werefoxes worship her.
For Star Fenhill, it's all she can think about. Star knelt down and placed a few coins on the ground in front of the statue, while the fox sniffed at her hand. Star giggled, turning over her hand to pet the kit's chin. It squeaked in joy.
Star:" Now don't take anything. This is a sacred place."
Star brought her hand up to her face and yawned.
Star:" Let's get you back to your family. I'm sure they'll want to see you safe. And I'm sure we'll both need our sleep for tonight."
...
Star usually didn't worry about the night time. After all, she is nocturnal, like all, or at least most foxes. Whenever she heard zombies, or creepers or other monsters like that, she was quick to hide. She doesn't have to work too hard to find a decent hiding place here in the forest like she did in the desert. She was born there, and she used to be forced to hide in the sand. If she was lucky, she was in a town, where they keep small pots big enough for her fennec form to fit in.
Star's fennec form was small, so she could easily avoid sight of zombies. Endermen were a little harder to evade, so she would avoid them all together. Skeleton archers had sharper sight, however, despite not having any eyeballs. Sometimes she would get dive bombed by the occasional demon eye.
Blood moons were the worst, however. During then, Star wouldn't have any control over her own body. Her magic would force her into her anthropic beast form, and her fur would turn red, and she would be almost feral. This is one of the drawbacks of being a werefox, or a were-anything in this world. Going completely feral is a very real possibility, and one that scares Star just thinking about it. Some, however, may have more control in this state than others, but they would still have a lot of rage throughout a blood moon night.
Star was moving slowly through the woods in her fox form, as not to be heard by any monsters. A demon eye was wandering by, and saw her. Deciding it's next target, it swooped down and tackled her to the ground before swooping back up. Star screamed as the eye came around for another dive bomb, but Star decidedly scurried away, which caused attention from zombies and skeletons, and... wolves. Star hated wolves. They never wanted to talk. They only wanted to chase her, and bite at her, and hurt her.
She ran, ran through the a forest of deadly monsters. She tripped and rolled down a steep hill, and landed in a berry bush. She felt as if her body was giving up on her, and her head was about to explode, the amount of times she must have hit it today.
Star:" Why me."
Star turned to her human form. Her senses picked up the sound of fire crackling. She went towards the sound out of curiosity, holding her slime staff close. Looking past a bush, she saw a man sitting near a campfire. He had a black fedora, and was wearing a brown trench coat with an orange poncho. He seemed to be carrying a variety of ranged weapons. Star took one unconscious step back, and heard the snap of a twig. She let out a small "Eep", and tensed up, biting her lower lip. The man whipped out what looked to be a revolver from his right hip.
Woodstock:" Who's out there! Show yourself, coward!"
