Goblets of Treasure

...

Ahzrukhal:" You should have taken my deal. Now... let's make a new one."

The arc demon was now standing over him. Terran was in a kneeling postition, attempting to use his blade as a crutch, while coughing and hacking up blood. The arc demon in human disguise pointed to his undisguised partner, who was now holding some sort of doll.

Ahzrukhal:" See my friend here? He's a voodoo demon. With that doll, and lock of hair he pulled from you, he can do anything he wants to you, and he doesn't even have to touch you. But I can make it stop, for the price of... your soul."

Terran coughed and spit up more blood, breathing heavily. He managed to look up at the arc demon with a look of great disgust.

Terran:" You can... you can go suck an egg."

Ahzrukhal's wicked smile turned to that of disdain. He stomped his foot on the ground in anger.

Ahzrukhal:" Oh how uncivilized. Here I was, thinking we could reach an understanding. It seems we will have to do this the hard way. It matters not. I will get what I want eventually."

Suddenly, Terran heard a loud booming sound nearby, and the voodoo demon screamed in pain, and burned into ash, returning it's corrupted soul back to the Underworld. Ahzrukhal turned towards the hunter, who was bearing a shotgun, filled with salt. Woodstock shot again, but this time, the arc demon was already teleporting away in a ring of fire, laughing sinisterly. Terran was now breathing heavily, but was slowly recovering from his wounds. Woodstock aimed his gun at Terran in caution.

Terran:" I should let you know... if you're gonna shoot me, you better not miss. I don't take kindly to having weapons pointed in my general direction."

Woodstock:" I never miss."

Woodstock lowered the shotgun, and offered a hand. Terran took it, and pulled himself up. Terran grinned.

Terran:" Tell that to demon who just gave you the slip."

Woodstock:" Teleportation doesn't count."

Terran:" It counts if your accounting for drawing speed."

Woodstock:" Maybe I shoulda shot you."

Terran:" Thank you." I take it you aren't here for me, then?"

Woodstock:" I'm here for much bigger game."

Star:" Oh thank goodness that's over!"

Woodstock:" What're you still doing here?"

Star:" Following you."

Woodstock:" Quit it."

Terran:" What are you two doing out here? Are you champions?"

Woodstock:" As if. You champions are a piece of work. I'm here hunting a bounty."

Terran:" How do know I'm a champion?"

Woodstock:" Way you dress, all the gear, and that look in your eyes, like your looking for a fight."

Terran:" And what make you different from me?"

Woodstock:" The difference, is that I don't claim fame."

Terran:" Neither do I, but since I came to Terranville, everyone seems to gather 'round me."

Woodstock:" And that's the problem. Champions are depended upon for so much, that normal people have gotten lazy and weak. Monsters attack. Let the champions handle it, it'll be fine. Lunar Cult. Call the champions. But what happens when the champions fall? What are we gonna do then?"

Terran:" These people have their own lives, their own jobs. We have ours."

Woodstock:" The only people who should depend on anyone are children."

Terran:" And I suppose you aren't here, because you depend on someone else? You don't take money from some else's hand?"

Woodstock opened his mouth to speak. Then quickly closed it.

Terran:" I thought so. Thank you for the rescue, but we're done here, I gotta get going. I want to make it to Jewel Town before sun up."

Woodstock:" Why don't you take the fennec with you? Hear that? You bother him from now on."

Star:" Rude! Maybe I will."

Terran:" Uh... I don't... uh... fine."

Woodstock:" Good. I got mah own business to take care of."

Woodstock continued to walk in the direction of of Terrainville. Terran sighed.

Terran:" If it's not one thing, it's another. You sure you wanna come along? I don't even know you."

Star:" Well no, but... but I know you. Well, sort of... I saw you taking care of those goblins! It was awesome! Wish I could do that! I'm Star, by the way, Star Fenhill."

Terran:" Terran. I'm looking for something called a moon crystal. Have you... seen anything like that?"

Star:" Hmm... no. I don't think so. Is it tasty?"

Terran:" It's not food. It's a stone. My tribe had one so that the corruption wouldn't bother us. It was destroyed, so we need a new one.

Star:" So where are we going then?"

Terran:" I'm going to Jewel Town. You're free to follow. Just watch out for creepers, and endermen... and skeletons... pretty much anything that moves."

Star:" I think I get it. Of course. Lythia must have sent me to help you!"

Terran:" Really? What makes you say that?"

Star:" Well you should know! You're a kitsune! A shifter, like me!"

Terran:" No offense, but I'm a high believer in self-management. Not that I don't believe in celestial deities, I just don't they have anything to with my fate."

Star:" Well how else do you explain our meeting?"

Terran:" Pure coincidence. Deities aren't allowed to intervene in mortal affairs, just as mortals are not allowed to fill the role of a deity."

Star:" You don't sound like someone who believes in coincidences."

Terran:" Well then, I must have the favor of luck on my side."

...

Jewel Town had a decent wall built around it. Goblins guarded the whole perimeter, each guard armed with spears, axes, bows, or hammers. The minority of the goblin race studies dark sorcery, which isn't illegal in Mythrolhia, but is a taboo in some cultures. Goblin sorcerers specifically study shadowflame magic, but Terran was unable to see any sorcerers from this side of the wall. A goblin archer stopped them at the gate.

Goblin archer:" Halt, travelers! State your business in Jewel Town!"

Terran:" My name is Terran, and this is Star. We are looking for an item of interest, and we believe your town may possess such an item. We are willing to conduct peaceful transaction."

Goblin archer:" Uhuh. Where did you say you are from?"

Terran:" I did not, but I have come from Terrainville. I am also here on their behalf."

Goblin archer:" Only a protector can conduct business on behalf of a major settlement."

Terran:" Well then, it's good thing I am the protector of Terrainville, now isn't it?"

The archer raised a brow.

Goblin archer:" You're a protector?"

Terran:" Let's just say I'm new to all this."

He showed the archer his protecter's medallion. The archer huffed.

Goblin archer:" Very well... Protector. Fjell! Open the gate!"

The gate opened, and Terran and Star walked inside without any further trouble. As they walked through the town, Terran immediately noticed the difference between between a goblin fortress, and Jewel Town. A goblin fortress would normally be strewn with houses made of brick and stone, each home made to house metal workers, and each worker lives withe their forge, forcing them to be well acquainted with it. Life is work, and work is life. Those who didn't make weapons, used them to defend, and assault, simply for the right of plunder, land, and occupation.

Jewel Town, however, was the exact opposite of a fortress. The houses were made of either fine wood, or chiseled stone. Goblins here wore all sorts of jewelry, showing off how rich they were. Most goblins thrive off of brute force, or petty thievery. But Jewel Town has no need for brute force or theivery, when they have the resources to build a sturdy wall, sell great products, and hire decent workers. Terran believed in two kinds of individuals. People, and savages. He believed that everyone had the right to do their own way, as long as it didn't negatively effect others who were innocent. Terran could respect their non savage ways. They have no desire to steal from others, or expand into their lands. They even allowed humans, and human-like people within their walls. But there was one caveat. They didn't seem to like champions.

Since they got in, they were constant being stared at. Some talked in whispers about the weapons they carried, and Terran was dressed in a light overcoat, and wore two blades underneath. He attempted to cover it up more effectively, but it wouldn't change their disdain for champions.

Star:" A lot people these days don't approve of champions these days."

Terran:" Why not?"

Star:" Many Champions are full of themselves, and only fight for glory or money."

Terran:" So? If I needed someone to protect me, I wouldn't be picky about their personality."

Star:" That's just it. They don't want protection. They want positive assurance. That's why there are people like me, just trying to get by on scraps. My home was taken from me because my people turned away champions. The next week, an eclipse happened. There were no champions to save us. My parents told me to run, and I did. I have no idea if they even survived or not. But I did, and I've been doing it for a very long time, and I never looked back."

Terran:" Sorry to here that. I've had a similar experience when I was an infant. Though, I don't think it was champion related. Besides, I thought champions are supposed to inspire independence, not reliance."

Star:" They are. But some champions like to exploit the weakness of those they defend. They want to be relied upon."

Terran:" Well don't worry. I'm going to be different. I want to be a champion that other people can trust, but they won't have to rely on."

Star:" That's why I came with you."

Terran:" Really. I thought you said it was because of your deity."

Star:" Well, yeah that, but also I'm tired of being a scavenger, and a lone fox. Since Glen Martial died, the champions of Mythrolhia began to experience hardships, many of them dying because their hub town was unable to support their efforts."

Terran:" Terrainville."

Star:" Right. When the champions began dying, major towns became easy targets for bandits, monsters, and worse, like the Enforcers of Far North Organization. A tyrant military from... well the farthest most northern region of Terraria. There's also the Order of Fate, who hate champions, and are dedicated to destroying their way of life. And that's not to mention the Lunar Cult."

Terran:" What's the Lunar Cult?

Star:" No one knows what happened to Glen Martial, but many have speculated it might be the work of the Lunar Cult. The Enforcers may be anti champions, but they would never attack them at the risk of starting a war with them. The Order would have broken down the walls to get to him if they wanted to. But they didn't. But the Lunar Cult, they have spies and assassins everywhere, and they believe the champions are a threat to their deity."

Terran:" And who is their deity?"

Star:" Have you ever heard of the Moon Lord?"

Terran:" I've... heard rumors."

Star:" Ever since Glen Martial's death, the cult has been more active then ever. After that, I began to loos faith in Lythia. That's why when you became the new protector, I decided to come with you. If the cult, or the order, or the Enforcers take over, people like me will have a harder time in Mythrolhia. I want to learn to survive in the new world."

Terran:" Hah. Well I doubt I'll be a good teacher for that. I mean, I just started this champion stuff."

Star:" Well, we can learn together. Now come on, let's find ourselves a moon crystal for your tribe."

...

They walked into a store filled with jewelry. There had to be a moon crystal here.

Terran:" Um... hello? Anyone here?"

Terran and Star looked around. Diamonds, pearls, rubies, and more. Necklaces on neck displays, gilded sword handles, circlets strewn the shelves, and everything was clean. But Terran couldn't find what he was looking for. They heard a voice coming from the entrance of a back room.

Goblin jeweler:" No touching! You'll dirty the merchandise!"

Terran:" We weren't touching anything."

Star:" We were hoping you can help us find something specific."

Goblin jeweler:" I may have it, I may not. But I don't deal with champions."

Terran:" Seriously?"

Goblin jeweler:" Seriously."

Star:" Well, technically I'm not a champion."

Goblin jeweler:" Even worse. You're a poor."

Star scoffed in offense.
