Sandstone can be crafted into Sandstone Tools the same way any other material can be crafted into tools. It is equivalent to stone and tools/weapons do as much damage and mine through materials as quickly as their stone equivalents. Sandstone tools only have 80 durability, which is less than stone's 131.
They can be crafted with sandstone, red sandstone, white sandstone, or black sandstone. There is no difference between tools made of the various sandstone variants aside from appearance.
